Children’s TV series Peppa Pig featured its first ever same-sex female couple in the programmes 18 year history.

The episode, titled ‘Families’, aired on Channel 5 on 6 September.

Penny Polar Bear introduced her two mums to main character Peppa.

During the episode, Penny sketched a picture of her family with her friends.

She said: “I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”

Over the years, Peppa Pig has made references to the LGBTQ+ community in the show and through her albums.

The song, Rainbow, gained the character gay icon status from fans across the world.

Peppa Pig Radio and the characters Spotify playlists also feature a number of queer artists, such as Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama, Hayley Kiyoko, Carly Rae Jepsen and more.

Her debut LP, named My First Album, racked up millions of streams on Spotify and has almost 30 million YouTube subscribers.

She also rejected a collaboration with superstar Adele.

In 2019, a petition was created to encourage the show to include a same-sex couple.

It garnered over 23,000 signatures.

The show started in 2004 and quickly became a staple in households across the world.
