Joe Locke has shared more details on his upcoming role in Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series will star Kathryn Hahn as the villainous spellcaster Agatha Harkness, who fans were first introduced to in WandaVision.

The ensemble cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone, David Payton, Asif Ali, Amos Glick, Kate Forbes, Brian Brightman, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Sasheer Zamata, Miles Gutierrez-Riley and Okwui Okpokwasili.

Additionally, Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Emma Caulfield Ford returns as Sarah Proctor/Dottie Jones and That ’70s/’90s Show star Debra Jo Rupp as Sharon Davis.

Following LuPone’s confirmation that Locke will play a “familiar” in the series, the Heartstopper star divulged more information on what we can expect in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

While he admitted that he was “utterly terrified and extremely excited” about his casting, Locke shared that he “learned” so much from the show’s leading women “about how to act as a person, as a lead of a show, as an actor respecting the crew”: “I learned a lot about the actor that I want to be from these women.”

Locke was “determined” to get the part, saying “putting your energy into something is never gonna harm a situation”.

“I had never been that determined about anything before, which I think meant that I was putting my energy into it. But I also think I’ve just been one of the luckiest people in the world in the last two years.”

Acknowledging that WandaVision was “about misunderstood people and people who are alienated by their society for reasons that they can’t control”, which he says “resonated a lot with the queer community”, Locke revealed that the series will be just as “camp”.

When LuPone appeared on The View, she said the series is based on a “coven of witches” and that her character is Lilia Calderu, a“450-year-old Sicilian witch whose power is divination and whose trial is tarot.”

“I researched her, she’s hot, she’s really hot, she’s got a great body and hair,” she said. “I didn’t know there were witches, I didn’t know anything about the Marvel world. There are witches in the Marvel world. So, we are a coven of witches and the witches are: Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza.”

After The View co-host Ana Navarro enquired about the release date, LuPone said filming hadn’t yet finished and that she anticipates a 2024 release.

Locke memorably rose to global superstardom last year as Charlie in Netflix’s queer teen drama Heartstopper, based on the beloved webcomic and graphic novel of the same name from Alice Oseman.

For his performance, Locke received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for Rising Star at the National Television Awards.
