Grab your masks and beware of clickers! HBO has released the official trailer for The Last of Us, and it’s terrifying.
Since the show was announced in 2020, fans of the Naughty Dog game have eagerly awaited the release of the live-action adaptation.
In the last few months, the network has slowly started to release more information regarding the series – including cast posters and two video teasers.
However on 3 December, fans were finally treated to the official trailer for the upcoming series – which gives an in-depth look at the show’s post-apocalyptic world and the terrifying monsters that inhabit it.
At the start of the video, a shot of a ravaged city is shown before Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is heard asking Joel (Pedro Pascal) why he “bothers going on.”
“If you don’t think there’s hope for the world, why bother going on?” she says, to which Joel responds: “You haven’t seen the world, so you don’t know. You keep going for family.”
The gripping trailer also gives a first glimpse at fan-favourite characters, like Tess (Anna Torv), Marlene (Merle Dandridge), Bill (Nick Offerman), Riley (Strom Reid), Henry (Lamar Johnson), Sam (Keivonn Woodward) and the menacing Bloater.
Shortly after the teaser was released, fans took to social media to express their excitement over the new footage.
One person tweeted: “They did such a phenomenal job recreating this world. I’m in awe.”
Another fan wrote: “I’m being so serious this is easily the best trailer I’ve seen for a tv show.”
Like its source material, The Last Of Us series is set to take place 20 years after a deadly pandemic decimated modern civilisation. With humanity on its last legs, Joel is tasked with smuggling 14-year-old Ellie across an abandoned United States.
“What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the US and depend on each for survival,” reads the logline, as reported by Deadline.
The show is also set to include the game’s beautifully established LGBTQ+ storylines, including the relationships between Bill and Frank (Murray Bartlett) and Ellie and Riley, respectively.
The Last Of Us is set to premiere on HBO on 15 January.
