Game of Thrones spinoff series House of the Dragon was renewed for a second season, following the success of the first ever episode.

The series is a prequel to the hit series Game of Thrones, which came to an end in 2019 after eight seasons.

House of the Dragon was renewed just six days after the release of the first episode and became the most watched pilot in HBO history.

Episode one racked up 20,000,000 viewers.

In a statement, Francesca Orsi, executive VP of HBO, said: “We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one. Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see TV.”

“A huge thank you to George R.R. Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two,” she added.

The highly-anticipated second season is slated to be released in 2024.

Production takes at least 10 months to film, and will then go into extensive post production.

House of the Dragon is adapted from Martin’s first novel, Fire & Blood, set 200 years before the events depicted in Game of Thrones.

The first season stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Sonoya Mizuno and many more.

The streaming service is said to have around seven Game of Thrones spinoffs currently in the works.

House Of The Dragon is available to stream on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
