Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has assured LGBTQ+ people that she will always “champion” the community after a group of hecklers stormed a town hall event of hers.

Protesters at the event on 19 October, which took place in Queens, New York City, played drums and chanted as a way of attacking the politician’s ongoing support for LGBTQ+ equality.

“AOC has got to go,” some can be heard shouting in a video, which had garnered almost 5.5 million times just five days after being shared to Twitter.

In the clip, the New York Democrat can be seen smiling and dancing as the hecklers continue to bombard her with verbal abuse.

Responding to the video, AOC explained that the “homophobes were yelling Westboro Baptist-style anti-LGBT+ slogans. What do you think I’m gonna do? Take them seriously?

“If you want to associate w/ their views, that’s your business.”

Referring to the district she represents, AOC added: “But NY-14 will ALWAYS have a champion for LGBTQ+ people on my watch. Period.”

The congresswoman has served as the US Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district since 2019 and is a member of the Democratic Party.

She has been a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and frequently uses her platform to show support for it.
