The official trailer for Scream VI is finally here and shows the latest Ghostface killer to be more brutal than ever before.

The upcoming slasher will follow the four survivors of the fifth film as they move to New York City to go to university.

Fan favourites Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) return in the sixth Scream instalment, with Cox also credited as an executive producer.

“Bringing Ghostface to New York adds an entirely new element to the story,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “Taking the character out of a small town and putting them in the heart of the city that never sleeps is more terrifying than ever.”

In the trailer, Ghostface can be seen hunting Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) as they run into a bodega to get help.

Elsewhere, it’s revealed that someone has been building a “shrine” of the first five film’s nine Ghostface killers – complete with their costumes and outfits of previous victims, including Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan).

Cox is expected to be the only character from the first film returning after a pay dispute resulted in the departure of the franchise’s beloved lead, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), last year.

It will mark Panettiere’s first appearance since Scream 4, released in 2011, appeared to show her death – something Scream 5 corrected with a subtle Easter egg 11 years later.

Whether or not David Arquette, the actor who portrayed Dewey Riley in the first five films, will somehow appear is unclear given that he was brutally killed off in the latest entry.

The trailer showed that his presence will be felt in Scream VI as Gale has a picture of the two of them up in her apartment.

It also revealed that Gale will get her long-awaited first phone call from Ghostface, which already looks like it will be a highlight of the film as she goes head to head with the masked killer.

Scream VI is out on 10 March and you can watch the trailer below or by clicking here.
