The emotionally charged trailer for the queer drama Our Son, starring Billy Porter and Luke Evans, has dropped.

The trailer starts with the family unit sitting around the table as the son of the pair, Owen, explains to his parents Nicky (Evans) and Gabriel (Porter): “Sometimes when I play with Eli, he wants to be the princess and I am the prince.”

“Well that’s okay your daddy always wanted to be the princess too,” Gabriel responds, to which Nicky answers: “Hello, who doesn’t want to be Cinderella?”

The mundanities of the family routine unfold and a snapshot of the couple’s life unfolds, with cracks in the couple’s dynamic beginning to appear.

This is followed by Gabriel confronting Nicky in bed after a marital spat in front of their friends over dinner, stating: “I really hate it when you argue with me in front of our friends.”

“Is that what this is about?” replies Nicky, with Gabriel reflecting back: “No.”

The trailer builds in pace as the couple navigate telling family about divorcing and starting the custody negotiations.

As the trailer reaches its climax, soundbites from the couple are spliced together across scenes of custody negotiations and the navigation of a new way of parenting: “I thought we were going to grow old and die together” / “Why are you doing this? You are destroying everything we built together.”

The first glimpse of Our Son seems to tap into many of the standards that LGBTQIA+ couples are held to against their hetronormative counterparts.

Directed by Bill Oliver, Our Son follows “Nicky, a book publisher devoted to his work, lives with his husband Gabriel, a former actor and stay-at-home dad, and their eight year-old son, Owen.”

The official synopsis continues: “Gabriel loves Owen more than anything; Nicky loves Gabriel more than anything. Despite appearances, Gabriel has been dissatisfied with their marriage for some time and files for divorce, leading to a custody battle that forces both of them to confront the changing reality of their love for each other and for their son.”

In June, Our Son had its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. At present the film holds an 85 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
