Vanessa Williams has shared new details about her highly anticipated debut in The Devil Wears Prada musical.

In February, it was announced that the Desperate Housewives star would be stepping into the iconic stilettos of Miranda Priestly in the West End adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling 2003 novel.

Oscar-winner Meryl Streep famously portrayed the character in the popular 2006 film – which the musical will also take inspiration from.

“Bringing Miranda Priestly to life in the West End is an absolute dream come true. Gird your loins, folks,” she told Variety at the time.

Williams’ casting was an instant hit with fans, with many taking to social media to express their excitement.

One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “VANESSA WILLIAMS IS GONNA PLAY MIRANDA PRIESTLY IN DEVIL WEARS PRADA OMG.”

Another fan tweeted: “Vanessa Williams really was the best person to cast as Miranda Priestly for the Devil Wears Prada musical.”

Since the news was announced, fans of Williams have anxiously awaited more details regarding the LGBTQIA+ icon’s role.

Fortunately, the Soul Food star recently spilt some tea on what fans can expect from her interpretation of Miranda, and if she’ll channelling Streep or her iconic Ugly Betty character, Wilhelmina Slater, for her performance.

Meryl Streep is Meryl Streep. Wilhelmina Slater is Wilhelmina Slater. And on stage, you have to project… and you can’t do things subtly because no one will see it when you’re in a 1500-seat theatre,” she revealed to Out in a new interview.

“So you’re going to own the stage and be a little bigger. So, it’s not going to be Meryl Streep. It’ll be my Miranda Priestley – with music, obviously.”

In addition to her new characterization of Miranda, Williams teased some of the fashion-forward plot details from the musical, which will feature an original score from music icon Elton John.

“We’re gonna have really good fashion… we’re recreating the Met Gala,” the Miss America winner told the publication. “It’s not just Runway, it’s going to be huge. It’s going to be worth your dollar, that’s for sure.”

Like its source material, The Devil Wears Prada musical will follow “fresh out of college, aspiring journalist Andy”, who lands a job as an assistant to Runway magazine’s terrifying editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, a position, as we know, “millions of girls would kill for.”

The synopsis adds: “Sacrificing her personal life to meet Miranda’s impossible demands, Andy finds herself seduced by the glamorous world she once despised.”

Fortunately, musical theatre enthusiasts won’t have to wait too long for Williams’ highly anticipated return to the West End – with previews for The Devil Wears Prada musical starting in July before its official opening at London’s Dominion Theatre in October.
