Sam Smith has had to cancel upcoming ‘Gloria the Tour’ shows in Birmingham and Glasgow due to a vocal cord injury.

Doctors have advised the ‘Unholy’ singer to “have complete vocal rest” after they were forced to abruptly end a gig in Manchester just four songs in on 24 May.

A spokesperson for Sam said they are “heartbroken” over the news but could do “permanent damage to their voice” if they keep singing.

“If they take some rest, they will be able to perform again,” a statement to fans said.

The singer has offered refunds to affected fans with tickets to the three cancelled concerts.

Sam had teased fans with a “surprise” at the end of their Manchester gig after hinting at a collaboration with Madonna on social media, though they were never able to reveal what it was.

“Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end,” they wrote on social media after fans were left perplexed when the AO Arena went dark and the cancellation was announced.

“During my third song, I noticed something wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong.”

Sam explained that they “tried everything” to get their voice “back in gear” but nothing worked.

“I am honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all,” they continued. “I love you all. I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry.”

‘Gloria’ became Sam Smith’s third number one album in the UK

The tour is in support of the singer’s fourth studio album ‘Gloria’, which debuted at number one in the UK.

‘Gloria’ also debuted at number one on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart, holding off fierce competition from ‘The Highlights’ by The Weeknd, ‘Midnights’ by Taylor Swift and ‘SOS’ by SZA to top both charts during its release week.
