Pop superstar Billie Eilish has opened up about her recent coming out announcement.

Back in November, the ‘What Was I Made For?’ singer made headlines for her in-depth interview in Variety’s Power of Women issue.

In the expansive piece, Eilish opened up about her struggles relating to other women.

“I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real,” she said.

“I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life. I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.”

Shortly after the release of her interview, fans and pop culture enthusiasts wondered if Eilish was coming out with her aforementioned statements.

After weeks of silence, the Oscar-winner gave further insight into her sexuality while attending Variety’s Hitmakers event.

When asked if she meant to come out in her interview, Eilish said: “No, I didn’t, but I kinda thought… Wasn’t it obvious? I just didn’t realise people didn’t know.”

The Grammy winner went on to say that she doesn’t really believe in the idea of coming out.

I’m just like, why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time and I just didn’t talk about it. But I was like, I saw all the articles and was like, ‘Oh, I guess I came out today… okay, cool,'” she continued.

“But it’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know so it’s cool that they know but ooh I’m nervous talking about… but no, I am for the girls.”

It didn’t take long for fans to take to social media to express their excitement over Eilish’s news.

One fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) wrote: “Mother mothering in a mothering way.”

Another fan commented: “”I’m still scared of them, but I think they’re pretty” oh yeah she’s one of us.”

Eilish took to Instagram to further clarify the incident: “Thanks Variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11am instead of talking about anything else that matters I like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream ‘what was I made for’.”

Eilish’s recent interviews aren’t the first time she has made headlines for her sexuality.

Back in 2021, the beloved talent faced backlash for her ‘Lost Cause’ music video, with some fans accusing her of “queer-baiting” throughout the visual.

The Grammy winner took to Instagram to seemingly address the backlash with a post containing BTS photos and a caption stating: “I like girls.”

The post only fuelled the fire for the songstress, which resulted in fans flooding her social media accounts with more questions.

Months after the controversy, the ‘Bad Guy’ singer shut down fan speculation and called out the double standard that female artists face in the industry during an interview with Elle

“Like, oh yeah, that’s everyone’s business, right? No,” she said. “Where’s that energy with men?”
