“How can you not be pansexual in space?”
Last week, Solo: A Star Wars Story writer Jonathan Kasdan confirmed that iconic character Lando Calrissian is pansexual.
A young Lando will be portrayed by Donald Glover in the forthcoming prequel, but the role was originally made famous by Billy Dee Williams in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.
Since that initial introduction, fans have speculated about the fluidity of Lando’s sexuality, and his openly flirtatious nature with Han Solo in the new Solo film has been picked up on by many film critics.
“How can you not be pansexual in space?” Donald Glover said when asked about the revelation of Lando’s sexual identity on SiriusXM’s Entertainment Weekly Radio show.
“There are so many things to have sex with. I didn’t think that was that weird. Yeah, he’s coming on to everybody. I mean, yeah, whatever.
“It just didn’t seem that weird to me ‘cause I feel like if you’re in space it’s kind of like, the door is open!
“It’s like, no, only guys or girls. No, it’s anything. This thing is literally a blob. Are you a man or a woman? Like, who cares? Have good time out here.”
Last year, new novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray heavily implied that Amilyn Holdo is bisexual.
The character was played by Laura Dern in The Last Jedi, and although the film didn’t acknowledge her sexuality, she was the first openly LGBTQ character seen onscreen in a Star Wars blockbuster.
Alden Ehrenreich will play a young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, which takes place years before the events of A New Hope.
It will be in cinemas from 24 May.
