Lyft have stuck firmly to their position as a strong ally to the LGBTQ community and fired a driver who took issue with two of his male passengers kissing each other.
RuPaul’s Drag Race star Aja – real name Jay Rivera – was travelling home with his boyfriend Lizard Lemon in the early hours of yesterday (12 December) in New York City when their driver stopped the car and told them to get out for being gay.
“Me and Aja were told to get out a Lyft for being gay. Not kidding,” Lizard Lemon posted on Twitter.
“The driver asked us to leave after kissing. In New York City. Really really disappointing.”
However, Lyft were swift to respond to the incident and sorted the matter out immediately.
“We have zero tolerance for any type of discrimination on our platform, and are committed to maintaining an inclusive and welcoming community,” a spokesperson said.
“What is being described here is against our terms of service and our values as a company.
“As soon as this incident was brought to our attention, we reached out to the passengers to offer our support.
“The driver has been deactivated from the Lyft platform.”
Lyft have been supportive of the LGBTQ community for many years now, and even advertise on RuPaul’s very popular podcast What’s The Tee? with Michelle Visage.
Earlier this year, the company was honoured with the Corporate Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign.
“Lyft has been a strong ally to the LGBTQ community, both with its inclusive internal policies for employees and its public positions supporting pro-equality legislation and policies across the country,” said Deena Fidas, director of the Workplace Equality Program at HRC.
Aja, meanwhile, will head back to the RuPaul’s Drag Race workroom in early 2018 to compete in the third season of All Stars.
