CupcakKe has reportedly been taken to hospital after posting a suicidal tweet.

The 21-year-old US rapper, who has paved a career with empowering anthems and intense support for the LGBTQ community, tweeted on Monday (7 January) night: “I’m about to commit suicide.”

Fans initially thought her Twitter account may have been hacked, but she later shared the message on her Instagram account alongside the caption: “Thank you for everything y’all have done for me I really appreciate it.”

Thousands of friends and fans, including comedian Kathy Griffin and frequent collaborator Charli XCX, have shared their support for the Chicago-based rapper, whose real name is Elizabeth Harris, on social media.

“Please stay strong. Please confide in friends and family. You are such a beautiful and wonderful person and we simply cannot lose you,” wrote Charli XCX in an emotional post on Twitter.

Several people have said they contacted the Chicago Police Department to check on the musician, including comedian and rapper Elijah Daniel, who’s worked with CupcakKe in the past under his alias Lil Phag.

“Chicago Police got to Elizabeth’s place and she has been taken to a hospital,” he wrote. “I don’t have any further information beyond that, but will update when I do.”

BBC Newsbeat confirmed with the Chicago Police Department that CupcakKe was taken to hospital for a “mental evaluation” and not injuries.

“Officers went out a few times to check on Elizabeth. Once they got in touch with her, they took her to hospital – not for her injuries – but for a mental evaluation,” they said.
