Jinkx Monsoon hopes you’re going to be good to mama, as she announced she’s joining the cast of Chicago on Broadway.

The RuPaul’s Drag Race star told Entertainment Weekly that she will be playing Matron ‘Mama’ Morton.

She makes history as the first drag performer to undertake the role, but Jinkx is used to achieving firsts onstage.

Jinkx was the first contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race to win more than one season, emerging victorious from season five of the US series and season seven of the All Stars edition.

The 35-year-old performer described joining the cast of Broadway’s longest running musical revival as a “lifelong dream.”

“To be making my Broadway debut, as my favorite role, in one of my favorite shows … [a] dream is coming true and then some.”

She said it was personally momentous, as the first song she performed in drag was ‘All That Jazz’ from the musical.

Her character is in charge of the County Jail where the story takes place, including a saucy solo number about accepting bribes from inmates.

To celebrate on social media, the star tweeted a video of her smiling and saying “we did it Joe”, a comedic reference to Kamala Harris’ video following Joe Biden’s electoral win in 2020.

Jinkx has previously been featured in an LGBTQ+ Christmas film, ‘Holiday Special’, as well as touring and releasing music with long-term creative partner, BenDeLaCreme. The pair are currently on their annual holiday tour together.

The performer’s Broadway run begins on the 16 January 2023 at the Ambassador Theatre in New York City.
