Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso has confirmed that footballer Colin Hughes (Billy Harris) is gay, marking the show’s first openly LGBTQ+ character.
In the third season’s third episode, titled ‘4-5-1’, the character is shown waking up in bed before picking his clothes up off the floor.
He then goes downstairs, where we are introduced to his male lover who has very kindly made him a cup of coffee.
“I don’t do caffeine,” Colin tells his love interest, who we now know is called Michael.
“Right, your body is a temple,” the latter responds.
“More like a church in an airport,” Colin jokes back.
The two then kiss before parting ways, with Colin reminding himself that he is “a strong and capable man” as he sits in his car.
Towards the end of the episode, Michael joins Colin and his sports team Richmond AFC for dinner, where is introduced as his “pal” – suggesting the two aren’t in a relationship.
Ted Lasso is an American sports comedy-drama which is named after its main character, a college football coach “who is hired to coach an English soccer team with the secret intention that his inexperience will lead it to failure, but whose folksy, optimistic leadership proves unexpectedly successful.”
The first season premiered on Apple TV+ in August 2020, with new episodes being released weekly on the platform.
