Omar Ayuso penned a heartfelt tribute to his Élite family after wrapping the show’s final season.

Since 2018, the popular Spanish teen series has captivated viewers with its dramatic storylines and memorable characters.

Élite has also received acclaim for its LGBTQIA+ representation and diverse set of queer characters, including Omar Shanaa (Ayuso), Ander Muñoz (Arón Piper), Patrick Blanco (Manu Rios), Rebeka Parrilla (Claudia Salas) and Iván Carvalho.

Due to its continued popularity, Netflix renewed the series for an eighth season in October, days before the seventh entry premiered.

While the news was exciting for long-time fans, Élite creator Carlos Montero later confirmed that the upcoming batch of episodes would be its last.

“We are shooting the eighth season, which will be the last season of Élite. We ended on a high note,” he announced during a press conference.

“Jaime [Vaca, co-showrunner for Season 7], Netflix, and I thought it was time to end it. I say this with great regret because it’s been several incredible years in which I’ve met wonderful actors, we’ve worked with all the directors we wanted to work with, and we’ve had the luxury of having Maribel these last two seasons.

Élite changed everyone’s life, there are actors who started with us and it has been their springboard to be now world stars, it is happening to this cast and it is a pride to have contributed to that and to know that they have seen us all over the world and liked it.”

Since that fateful day, the cast and crew have been hard at work on the eighth season – which recently wrapped production on 20 December.

In light of the show’s bittersweet end, Ayuso took to Instagram to reflect on his journey and pay tribute to his Élite peers.

“You are the best team in the world. The best. Thank you for loving me so well, for making it so easy. Thank you for seeing me, understanding me and respecting me,for waiting for me when I needed it,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself holding a bouquet.

“For instilling in me the importance of being a good partner, for becoming my first references, for teaching me to love cinema through the people who do it.

“Thank you for making me older. Thank you for letting me meet you. Thank you for these almost 7 years of our lives. A whole life. I love you guys.”

Towards the end of his statement, Ayuso expressed his hope of crossing paths with castmates and the crew “a thousand times on the road.”

As of this writing, a release date for Élite season eight has yet to be announced.

The first seven seasons of Élite are streaming now on Netflix.
