Stranger Things actor Noah Schnapp has revealed more about his coming out journey and the response from his friends and family last year.

The 18-year-old shared how playing Will Byers, his character on the hit Netflix series, inspired him to come out, in a new interview with Variety.

“Once I did fully embrace that Will was gay, it was just an exponential speed towards accepting it for myself,” Schnapp told the publication.

“I would be in a completely different place if I didn’t have Will to portray, and to embrace and help me accept myself. I think if I never played that character, I probably would still be closeted.”

Schnapp also spoke about his experience coming out to friends and family, beginning with his twin sister, Chloe Schnapp.

“I can’t tell anyone else before I tell my own twin sister – she’ll kill me,” he joked.

“She was ecstatic. She said that she would’ve hated the idea of me marrying another girl and having to compete with that girl for my attention. The fact that now it’ll be a guy, she was like, ‘Oh he’ll be my best friend.'”

He soon came out to other family and friends, but made sure to prioritise Stranger Things co-star and close friend, Millie Bobby Brown.

“I kept trying to do it in person with her, and it was too hard,” he revealed. “So then I just FaceTimed her one day in the middle of a Party City and I was like, ‘Millie, I’m gay.’ And she was ‘Oh, Schnapper! You told me finally!'”

Since coming out, Schnapp attended his first Pride in New York City, sharing photos of his experience to Instagram.

He concluded the interview recalling the experience of being at Pride with his family: “It was truly such a liberating feeling, just seeing my parents cheer me on. I’ve never felt so supported and loved.”
