Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli have revealed where they want to see their fan-favourite queer characters in a sequel to The Old Guard.

The action blockbuster, which premiered last week on Netflix, focuses on a squad of centuries-old immortals and mercenaries with regenerative healing abilities.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film also stars Charlize Theron (Atomic Blonde), Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Matthias Schoenaerts (The Danish Girl), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Harry Melling (Harry Potter).

The Old Guard received wide acclaim from critics for Theron’s leading performance and the same-sex storyline between Kenzari and Marinelli’s characters, Joe and Nicky, due to the significant lack of LGBTQ+ representation in the action genre.

In the film, the characters are believed to have been together for at least 900 years, and one scene between the pair in particular has been hailed as one of the most authentic – and passionate – queer movie scenes of 2020.

In a recent interview, Prince-Bythewood said screenwriter Greg Rucka has envisioned The Old Guard as a trilogy, so when we spoke with Zenzari (Aladdin) and Marinelli (Martin Edin) over Zoom, we asked where they’d like to see their characters in a sequel.

“Always together,” responded Marinelli and yes, we were almost in tears.

“I would be interested in seeing their relationship as it started, to have a little flashback and go back in time,” admitted Kenzari. “At the same time, I would like to see what would happen if they lose each other.

“But then again, the story is so profound and so well made, that I’m very curious to find out what happens next.”

Kenzari added of their romance: “As an actor, you wanna do stuff that is original and authentic and in this case, I’d personally never seen anything like it before.”

Marinelli joked that he “will be ready next week” if a sequel is commissioned, and said it would be a “fantastic opportunity to go deep and study more of this story and these characters.”

The Old Guard debuted in top spot of Netflix’s chart in both the United States and United Kingdom after its release, and one week later, it’s still sitting comfortably in the runner-up position – so expect announcement of a sequel shortly.
