Inventing Anna will be Shonda Rimes’ first series for a streaming service.

The cast for Shonda Rhimes’ upcoming Netflix series has been announced.

The 10-episode drama will star Anna Chlumsky (Veep) as a journalist who investigates the case of Anna Delvey (Julia Garner), an Instagram socialite who notoriously committed theft and grand larceny for scamming New York hotels.

The series is inspired by Jessica Pressler’s article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People for The New York Magazine.

Laverne Cox will play celebrity trainer and life coach Kacy Duke, who becomes embroiled in Anna’s controversy but has the wits to stay out of any trouble herself. According to Variety, Kacy “finds herself becoming more than just a coach to Anna”.

Cox is best known for her critically-acclaimed role on Orange is the New Black, for which she became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in any acting category.

In 2015, she won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Special as an executive producer for Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word, making her the first openly transgender woman to win the award.

Scandal star Katie Lowes will star as Rachel, a woman who almost ruins her life because of her dedication to Anna.

Shonda Rimes is best known as the showrunner, creator, head writer, and executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy – the longest running American primetime medical drama series in history – as well as Scandal and Private Practice.

She is also the executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder, under her production company Shondaland.
