Jonathan Van Ness has hit out at Donald Trump and Mike Pence in a video for Planned Parenthood.
Earlier this week, the Queer Eye star opened up about his HIV diagnosis for the first time in an interview with The New York Times, calling himself a proud “member of the beautiful H.I.V.-positive community”.
Now, he’s partnered with Planned Parenthood to urge his followers to have a sex life that is “safe, fun and empowering”.
“Talking with your partners about STDs and safer sex is an important part of any healthy and sexy relationship,” he said in a campaign video on his Instagram page. “STDs are extremely common and nothing to be ashamed of.
“Most people who have sex will get an STD at some point in their lives. The good news is all STDs can either be treated or totally cured with medicine. Most of the time STDs don’t show any symptoms, that’s why STD testing is so important.”
The grooming guru then outlined why Planned Parenthood is so important.
“Last year, Planned Parenthood health centres provided more than 4.7 million tests and treatments for STDs, including 740,000 HIV tests,” he explained, before hitting out at Donald Trump and Mike Pence.
“But what you should also know is that the Trump-Pence administration is making it even harder for people to access free or low-cost STD testing and treatment by forcing Planned Parenthood out of the Title X Program.”
In an interview with Refinery29, Jonathan said Planned Parenthood made a “huge difference” in his life, so he partnered with them to shed light on the incredible work that they do and to fight back at the religious right.
“The ultra-religious, radical, right-wing fundamentalists are dictating our public health policy right now, ” he told the publication. “You have the Trump administration with this gag rule that basically forces Planned Parenthood out of Title X.”
