Every year, American Horror Story leaves viewers on the edge of their seat trying to guess what horrific theme the show will tackle next, but there’s no denying that the first (Murder House) and third (Coven) seasons will always be standouts.
As the show has progressed, creator Ryan Murphy’s unspoken rule that each season stood alone from each other – not least because the cast return to play different characters each time – has slowly been bent, with cameos abound in recent seasons.
Now, it seems that rule is being broken entirely, as a previously teased crossover between Murder House and Coven has been confirmed by Ryan in a tweet that’s got the whole fandom going wild.
“The Coven/Murder House AHS crossover season won’t be happening next year… because it’s happening THIS YEAR,” he wrote. “WITCHES RULE THIS SEPTEMBER.”

While information is scarce right now – as is typical with the show – we now know the show will debut in early September.
We also know some previously confirmed details about which cast members will be returning, including series regulars Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Kathy Bates, as well as Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson, Adina Porter and Leslie Grossman.
They’ll be joined by Hollywood legend Joan Collins, who will make her American Horror Story debut as the “glamorous” grandmother to Evan’s character, who’s been described as a ‘comedic hair stylist’.
Show creator Ryan Murphy, who’s known for keeping tight-lipped about details on the horror anthology series, has previously taken us back in time with Asylum, broached the current climate with Cult, and flipped between generations with Coven.
But it seems he’s now ready to take on a whole new challenge, as he revealed in January that the next season of American Horror Story, which will air later this year, will be set in the future.
“All I’ll say about it is I want to go to the future – still topical, but the future, which I’ve never done,” he said. Asked whether this meant viewers would be heading into outer space for the next season, he clarified: “Not space.”
We’re keeping our fingers crossed that he’s managed to convince Jessica Lange to come back.
