Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has hinted at Yasmin Finney’s future with the beloved series.

Back in 2022, BBC announced that the Heartstopper star had joined the long-running series as a new Rose.

“This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself, Russell [T Davies], has not only made my year, it’s made my life,” she said in a statement following her casting.

Davies echoed similar sentiments in an additional statement at the time.

“Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder – how can there be another Rose? You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set,” he teased.

“We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse.”

Since that fateful day, Davies has remained relatively mum on Finney’s character and her role in the series.

However in a new column for the 594th issue of the Doctor Who Magazine, the It’s A Sin creator hinted that Rose’s arc might go beyond her appearance in the 60th anniversary specials.

“I stand at the back of the studio. Mille [Gibson] catches my eye. We wave across the distance, but I don’t step in. They’re busy. Clock ticking,” he wrote, per Comic Book Resources.

Davies went on to say that the past week had been full of goodbyes ranging from “crew, office staff, and actors,” including Finney.

“Yasmin Finney wrapped a few days ago, big hugs, see you soon – but it all comes down to this. The last scene.”

Davies’ recent statement is the first time he has mentioned the possibility of Finney reprising her role in the show’s 14th season – which is led by Ncuti Gatwa.

While fans will have to wait a little longer to see if the speculation is true, the Heartstopper star previously hinted at working with Gatwa in an interview with The Evening Standard.

“We’re intertwined, and I think we complement each other so well,” she teased.

Elsewhere in her sit down, the openly trans talent gushed about joining the Doctor Who universe, revealing that she has watched the series since she was a kid.

“It was prestige television, the créme de la créme, and it still is. To be part of that world, and around some of TV’s gold stars, is a blessing,” she explained.
