Pop-rap superstar Lil Nas X is set to release an unscripted project about his music journey.

On 18 August, the Grammy winner surprised fans when he announced his first-ever documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero.

The film – which is co-directed by Academy Award nominee Carlos López Estrada and award-winning filmmaker Zac Manuel – is set to shine an intimate light on LNX’s personal and private life as he navigates his popular concert tour.

The synopsis reads: “Shot over the course of 60 days with unparalleled access, the film follows Montero Hill, a.k.a. Lil Nas X, on an emotional odyssey through the creation and performance of the critically acclaimed “Long Live Montero” show.”

In addition to the film’s announcement, the Grammy winner revealed that Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero will make its grand premiere during the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) – which is set to take place between 7 September and 17 September.

In a statement, TIFF’s CEO Cameron Bailey expressed his excitement over the project, describing it as a “captivating journey”.

Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero is a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music and identity. In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape,” Bailey said.

“The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music. We are thrilled to host Lil Nas X at Tiff this year.”

Shortly after the news made headlines, fans of the ‘That’s What I Want’ rapper took to social media to celebrate his new doc.

One fan wrote: “Many many many people do not truly appreciate what an achievement being selected to premiere at the TIFF is. This is bigger and more meaningful than an album, y’all.”

Another fan tweeted: “If it’s even half as creative, emotional and exhilarating as his actual concerts, it’ll be a masterpiece. Can’t wait to see it.”

As of this writing, a wide release date for Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero has yet to be announced.

Since making his debut in 2019,  Lil Nas X has dominated the music industry with his unapologetic music and larger-than-life visuals.

In 2021, the ‘Scoop’ rapper dropped his critically acclaimed debut album Montero – which earned five Grammy nominations and  featured his chart-topping track ‘MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).’
