Mel C is a true LGBTQ ally.
During a performance with drag queens from club night Sink The Pink at Brighton’s Pride Pleasure Gardens on Saturday night, the Spice Girls singer took a moment to talk about the importance of supporting the trans community.
While gay people have made great strides for equality over the last few decades, trans and non-binary people continue to be left behind, and have received an especially high amount of hate and misinformation in the mainstream media in recent years.
“I’ve been given this very, very special flag by one of my beautiful dancers, and I’m going to be holding this tonight when I sing the next song,” Mel C said as she unfurled the pink, blue and white Trans Pride flag on stage for the audience to see.
“This is a flag – I’m gonna get emotional again – this is a flag that we probably don’t see often enough, and this is a flag we all want to see a lot more of.
“If there’s anybody in this room who doesn’t know what this flag is, this is trans and non-binary. Every part of the Pride community is very, very important, so tonight I’m shouting for this one.”
Before performing Spice Girls classic 2 Become 1, she added: “We all need, we all deserve, and we all should have love.”

2 Become 1, which was the Spice Girls’ third UK number one single, has always been a favourite among the LGBTQ community – especially after Emma Bunton confirmed speculation that the lyrics were changed to be more inclusive of queer fans.
Over the years, Mel C has performed the song with a number of special guests from the LGBTQ community, including Years And Years frontman Olly Alexander at a charity gig in 2016, and drag superstar Courtney Act at New York Pride this year.
