Tessa Thompson has opened up about Valkyrie’s sexuality in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder film.

On 8 July, the highly-anticipated MCU project is set to premiere in theatres worldwide.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the fourth Thor adventure is set to follow the titular character (Chris Hemsworth) as he embarks on a journey of inner peace.

However, alongside his time of self-reflection, the Avenger will also battle the “galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher” who seeks to exterminate all gods.

Fortunately, an array of fan-favourite characters are set to help the beloved hero, including Sif (Jaimie Alexander), Korg (Waititi), Jane Foster / Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) and everyone’s favourite bisexual warrior Valkyrie (Thompson).

“Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late,” the synopsis reads.

Even though MCU enthusiasts are excited for the continuation of Phase Four, LGBTQ+ fans are eager to see if the film will explore Valkyrie’s bisexuality.

Since her debut in Thor: Ragornok, fans have called on Marvel execs to give the character a queer storyline – especially after a scene confirming Valkyrie’s sexuality was, for some reason, edited out of the film.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Thompson revealed that her character’s bisexual identity was a “big topic of conversation” throughout the creative process.

“We talked about it a lot. Because I think rightfully there’s this real want in audiences to see characters be very clearly queer or LGBTQIA inside these spaces,” she revealed.

“And I think it’s hugely important to have representation. And also as humans, I think that we are not defined by our sexuality and by who we love.

“And sometimes I think to hang a narrative completely on that is a way of actually diminishing the humanity of the character. Because you don’t allow them to be anything else.”

Towards the end of her interview, the Dear White People star revealed that there wasn’t enough time to explore her character’s love life properly.

“It becomes the only storyline, particularly in a movie like this where you don’t, frankly, have a lot of room for storyline,” she said.

However, the actress went on to say that she was happy with where the film took Valkyrie while also expressing her hopes for future opportunities to play the character.

“So there was a lot of conversations in terms of how to treat that with Valkyrie. And I feel really good, personally, about where we got to go,” she continued.

“I hope that she’s a character that fans continue to connect to, that we have a lot of time to explore her, in all of her humanity.”
