Netflix’s hit LGBTQ+ series Warrior Nun has been cancelled after two seasons.
The fantasy-drama, which is based on the comic book Warrior Nun Areala by Ben Dunn, follows 19-year-old Ava Silva, who wakes up as a member of the ancient Order of the Cruciform Sword.
As part of her newfound membership, she is tasked with fighting demons and the “powerful forces” that represent both heaven and hell who want to find and control her.
Upon its release in 2020, the series received universal acclaim from critics and audiences – which resulted in the second season receiving 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
While the show has been praised for its terrific writing and dynamic storytelling, queer viewers have lauded the series for its LGBTQ+ representation and the romantic will they, won’t they relationship between Ava and Sister Beatrice.
At the end of the second season, fans were treated to the pair finally taking the next step in their love story, with Ava admitting to being in love with Beatrice before being swept away in a portal.
However despite the dedicated fanbase and landing in Netflix’s Top 10 list, the popular streamer announced on 13 December that the show would not return for a third season (per Entertainment Weekly).

The news was later confirmed by the series’ showrunner and creator, Simon Barry, in a statement on Twitter.
“I’ve just found out that Netflix will not be renewing #WarriorNun – my sincere appreciation to all the fans who worked so hard to bring awareness to this series and for the love you showed me, the cast and the whole production team,” he wrote. “It was a privilege to be a part of this.”
Over the last few days, fans have flocked to social media to express their sadness over the cancellation – with some even calling on other streaming services to pick up the show.
One person wrote: “At this point, I DON’T WANT NETFLIX TO HAVE WARRIOR NUN. They do NOT deserve a show this amazing, a cast this dedicated, a showrunner this committed, or a fandom this talented. Absolutely the f**k not. We’re looking for platforms that can simply DO BETTER.”
Another fan tweeted: “Warrior Nun had zero, and I repeat, zero promo. Like Netflix didn’t spend one dollar for the promo. And still, it made big numbers. They still cancelled it. Why? Like, I need a fucking reason. There’s always something when it comes to wlw… I’m so pissed right now.”
In addition to fan outcry on social media, the viewers have also set up a petition on Change.org calling on the streamer to renew the series.
As of this writing, the form has earned close to 75,000 signatures.
