Alison Brie has opened up about the shocking cancellation of her Netflix series GLOW.
In 2020, fans of the beloved 80s comedy-drama were left devastated after the popular streamer axed the series – despite being renewed for a fourth and final season.
The series was reportedly three weeks into filming when production came to a halt amid concerns over the COVID outbreak.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging,” a Netflix spokesperson told Deadline at the time.
“We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world.”
The show’s cancellation instantly struck a chord with fans, who took to social media to slam Netflix for its decision.
One user wrote: “Why does Netflix consistently start telling queer stories, not promote them enough and then cancel them? GLOW was such a diverse, interesting and heartfelt show, this is just so sad.”
Another user tweeted: “Netflix will really cancel shows like Glow and then spit out more of Emily in whatever and Kissing Booth to pollute the world. I hate it here.”
In a new interview with Decider, Alison Brie reflected on the popular series and revealed that she’s still devastated over Netflix’s decision.
“It’s the great heartbreak of my career. But it will forever live on as, like, this great thing,” she revealed.
“I loved working on it – maybe more than anything I’ve worked on! – and I miss it a lot. But I feel very grateful for the time I had on the show.”
While Brie admitted that Netflix’s cancellation of the inclusive series was “surprising”, she also said it was “eclipsed by the shock of everything that was happening globally.”
“You know, so in a way it was almost like it put things in perspective,” she added.
GLOW revolved around Brie’s character Ruth Wilder and her journey within the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a syndicated women’s wrestling circuit from the 80s. The show was commended for exploring topics such as sexuality, feminism and racism.
Alongside Brie, the series starred Kate Nash, Sydelle Noel, Britney Young, Marc Maron, Britt Baron, Gayle Rankin, Kia Stevens, Jackie Tohn and Ellen Wong.
