From Steve McQueen and James Dean to Robert Redford and David Beckham, the roll neck has long been a classic that has served us well when it comes to our autumn/winter wardrobes. It has the appeal of a jumper with the added bonus of a scarf and yet a strangely unexplainable sex appeal that works throughout all ages. So it’s good news if you’re a fan of the humble roll neck, because the autumn season is here and with it returns our need for warmth and style rolled in to one… pardon the pun.
There are many ways that one can wear a roll neck: Cashmere and silk-blend styles are thin enough that they can replace your existing base layers and be worn beneath a button up shirt or even under another jumper, while thicker styles should be worn as a statement piece that can be rolled down or pulled over your chin to stay warm and stay chic.
WEAR IT FORMAL
When it comes to wearing a roll neck on a formal occasion there are two things to think about: your outfit and fabric. Fabric plays a big party in the dressing scenario for two reasons: A thicker knit will always make the outfit appear more casual and will also not allow you to layer under jackets or blazers and your outfit should be smart enough that you’re going sans shirt. This Raey sweater is a fine-cashmere so would look equally as chic worn alone with a black blazer as it would underneath a shirt.
TRY IT CASUAL (BUT CLASSIC)
When it comes to wearing a roll neck in the day you’ve got free reign over fabrics, silhouettes and prints. We’re loving this AMI Alexandre Mattiussi knit with dropped armholes and a big cosy roll neck. Wear it with some great selvedge denim or try some high waisted pants and biker boots for a more modern look.
