Chechnya’s president wants to wipe out gay community by the end of May

Ramzan Kadyrov reportedly wants all LGBT people to be ‘eliminated’ by Ramadan.

Ramzan Kadyrov, President of Chechnya, has publicly declared that he wants all LGBT people in the country to be eliminated by May 26, which marks the start of Muslim holiday, Ramadan.

British Foreign Prime Minister, Alan Duncan, confirmed the threat during yesterday’s Parliament hearing: “Human rights groups report that these anti-gay campaigns and killings are orchestrated by the head of the Chechen republic, Ramzan Kadyrov.

“He has carried out other violent campaigns in the past, and this time he is directing his efforts at the LGBT community. Sources have said that he wants the [LGBT] community eliminated by the start of Ramadan.”

He added: “Such comments, attitudes and actions are absolutely contemptible.”

The threat comes just a day after the Chechen President denied the country was torturing gay men during a televised meeting with Vladimir Putin.

He makes these claims despite respected Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta reporting last month that around 100 gay men had been rounded up and tortured in what is widely being referred to as a modern-day ‘concentration camp’.

A spokesperson for Ramzan Kadyrov also said the rumours were false, claiming there are no gay people in Chechnya: “You cannot arrest or repress people who just don’t exist in the republic.”

Hundreds protested outside the Russian Embassy in London last week, and there is currently a petition to stop ‘abduction, torture and killing of gay men’ in Chechnya.

The British government condemned the “utterly barbaric” torture of gay men in Chechnya, with Sir Alan Duncan telling the House of Commons that the country’s actions are of the “utmost concern to the UK”.

Joe Biden, former US Vice-President, has also called on Trump to help bring an end to Chechnya’s anti-LGBT abuse.
