Barry Humphries continues to cause controversy with his outdated views.
The long-running comedian, most famous for his drag character Dame Edna, has a notorious history of offensive comments, and it seems he still hasn’t learned his lesson.
During an interview with The Spectator about his upcoming show at the Barbican, Barry proclaimed that he’s “grateful” to US President Donald Trump for “stirring up politics”, and later dismissed concerns over transphobia.
After being informed by the interviewer that more than 40% of trans individuals have attempted or considered suicide, Barry referred to outrage from trans activists as “terrible rat-baggery” and called being trans “a fashion”.
“How many different kinds of lavatory can you have?” he questioned in the interview, addressing the recent debate over whether trans people should be allowed to use their preferred bathrooms (for the record; yes they should).
He added: “It’s pretty evil when it’s preached to children by crazy teachers.”
Barry then went on to defend previous comments comparing gender confirmation surgery to ‘mutilation’.
“They had their genitalia chopped off and tucked in and whatever they had to do. And that aroused a lot of indignation – probably among the people who’d spent a lot of money having it done,” he said.
“But I don’t think I’m right to pontificate. I’m really an actor.”
