Kim Petras and Sam Smith have made LGBTQ+ history with their hit single Unholy.

Back in August, the two beloved talents teased fans with their infectious pop anthem on TikTok.

After going viral on the platform, the two music heavyweights officially released the record on 22 September to critical acclaim.

In the weeks following its release, the song reached both the number three and number two spots on the Billboard Hot 100.

However on 24 October, the two music talents and their song finally reached the number-one spot on the coveted chart.

The landmark achievement now makes Petras the first openly trans artist to obtain a Billboard number one single. Smith has also become the first openly non-binary solo artist to reach the top spot as well.

Alongside their first number-one single, Unholy also marks Petras’ first Billboard Hot 100 entry since making her music debut in 2017.

In response to the history-making news, the Heart to Break singer took to her Instagram to celebrate the achievement.

“NUMBER ONEEEE HOT 100! I’m so grateful. Sam I can’t thank you enough for riding with me for years at this point,” Petras wrote.

“I’m so honoured to be a part of your first number one in the US, which you should have 500 of at this point. I love you forever, angel Sam.”

As of this writing, Smith has yet to release a statement.

Smith and Petras’ groundbreaking career milestone comes a month after the latter expressed her hopes for Unholy reaching the number one spot.

“It does look like a kind of [chart-topping] trajectory, not gonna lie – that No. 1 slot would be pretty sick,” she told Billboard.

“It’s been such a pleasant collaboration with someone I truly respect and feel very inspired by. I’m extremely happy for Sam – and of course, me too.”

The Malibu singer also opened up about her hopes for more trans artists to reach major chart success.

“I just really don’t want to be the last. There’s always been incredible and talented trans artists, and they have been paid dust,” she explained.

“That same story just keeps repeating over and over for trans girls who have been making exceptional music and have been pushed under the rug while someone else takes credit from them.”
