“The gays are everywhere!”
When Sohail Justin Akhavein’s mother needed a picture of a unicorn mirror she had bought her son at an estate sale so she could send it to a carpenter to commission a new one to be made for his sister, she resorted to searching his Instagram for a clear image of the fabulous piece.
The only ones she could find were of Sohail posting thirsty snaps of himself in said mirror, and so she had no choice but to include her scantily-clad son in the picture.
The response she received from the carpenter, however, was not one she was expecting.

“I was forced to use the only photos of the mirror I could find which were your gd smut photos,” she wrote in a text message to Sohail.
“He asked if part of his payment can be the man in the photos. The gays are everywhere!”
After posting his mother’s message on Twitter, Sohail’s pictures have gone viral, receiving more than 20,000 likes.
“I’ve never taken their acceptance, warmth, love, and sass for granted because I am well aware of many members of our greater queer community may struggle to navigate their personal expression of queerness on a platform their parents may have access to, let alone possibly not having direct access to those four things listed above,” Sohail told BuzzFeed about the loving relationship he has with his parents.

“Being a person of colour who was born into a set of ideologies that were in direct conflict with my personhood, it would be foolish to not allow my parents to ’struggle’ with allowing their son to be who he is,” Sohail added.
“They’re human, and allowing a human to process is part of the journey of meaning-making.”
As for his mother’s reaction to his Instagram account when she was first introduced to it, Sohail explained that it was quite an education for her.
“After my sister read some of the comments [to her] she soon learned such words as ‘thirst trap’, ‘daddy’ and ‘VPL’,” he said.
