Director Pedro Almodóvar has revealed when his queer western with Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke will premiere.
Back in June, the acclaimed director announced that he was working on a 30-minute short film titled Strang Way of Life.
Described as his “answer to Brokeback Mountain,” the director also revealed that Pascal would be playing a gunslinger named Silva, with Hawke stepping into the role of a Sherrif named Jake.
“One of them travels through the desert to find the other. There will be a showdown between them, but really the story is very intimate,” Almodóvar explained to Indie Wire at the time.
When asked if the two characters will share a romantic relationship, the acclaimed director stated: “You can guess. I mean, masculinity is one of the subjects of the movie.”
Over the last few months, Almodóvar has remained relatively silent regarding the film’s subject matter and its premiere date, until now.
During his recent appearance on Dua Lipa’s At Your Service podcast, the 73-year-old creative said that the upcoming project would debut at the Cannes Film Festival – which is set to take place in May.
The beloved director also gave a bit more insight into the film, describing it as a “queer Western, in the sense that there are two men and they love each other.”

“It’s about masculinity in a deep sense because the Western is a male genre. What I can tell you about the film is that it has a lot of the elements of the Western,” he explained to Lipa.
“It has the gunslinger, it has the ranch, it has the sheriff, but what it has that most Westerns don’t have is the kind of dialogue that I don’t think a Western film has ever captured between two men. And now I think I’m telling you a little bit too much.”
Towards the end of his interview, Almodóvar admitted that the film was “something very different” for him, stating: “I mean, it’s another genre that I’ve never done before.”
Back in September, Hawke announced that he and Pascal officially wrapped the project – which was filmed in Spain’s Almería region – with a selfie on Instagram.
“Golden hour is unreal in Spain. [Pedro Pascal] and I are wrapping production on #ExtrañaFormadeVida (#AStrangeWayOfLife). It’s been a dream to work with Pedro Almodóvar and his wonderful team. Apologies for my Spanish,” he wrote.
Strange Way of Life is also set to star Jason Fernádez, Sara Salámo, José Condessa, Pedro Casablanc, George Steane and Manu Ríos.
