Warrior Nun fans, unite! The show has officially been saved.
Following its controversial cancellation last year, director and showrunner Simon Barry has confirmed that the Netflix series will make an “epic” return.
Barry said in a tweet: “Today, I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion and amazing efforts – #WarriorNun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine.”
He added that “more details” will come “soon” and thanked fans for their various attempts and campaigns to save the series.
Fans were, understandably, elated with Barry’s announcement. One wrote: “Simon, THANK YOU. The best positive news ever in my life. Thank you for your support this whole time.”
Another tweeted: “This has to be one the best feelings in the world knowing that we accomplished something like this. This fandom is extraordinary. Congrats everyone!”
The second season of Warrior Nun premiered in November 2022 and made history with the highest audience score for a Netflix series.
Based on Ben Dunn’s comic book Warrior Nun Areala, the series follows 19-year-old Ava Silva (Alba Baptista), who wakes up in a morgue with supernatural abilities and that discovers that she must battle demons on Earth.
While Warrior Nun was praised for its writing, acting and action sequences, it gained a passionate following due to its LGBTQ+ representation and blossoming relationship between Ava and Sister Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young).
After the series was axed, fans launched a change.org petition – which currently has over 123,000 signatures.
At the time, Barry said: “I’ve just found out that Netflix will not be renewing #WarriorNun – my sincere appreciation to all the fans who worked so hard to bring awareness to this series and for the love you showed me, the cast and the whole production team. It was a privilege to be a part of this.”
