Jen Richards has burst one of the biggest bubbles in the entertainment industry.

Jen Richards, the creator of the Emmy-nominated web drama Her Story, has auditioned and successfully landed the role of a cisgendered woman. Many trans actresses face obstacles in getting cast in trans roles, let alone a cisgendered one.

Richards will be appearing in the fourth series of the crime series Blindspot, where she will be playing the role of CIA agent Sabrina Larren.

In the episode, her character will clash with FBI agent Edgar Reade, played by Rob Brown, over the holding of a suspect.

Richards isn’t a stranger when it comes to breaking barriers, as she became the first openly trans actress to play a role on a CMT network show, when she appeared in three episodes of Nashville.

The role is also a breakthrough for Richards, who was previously rejected from playing the role of a trans sex worker in the film Anything, a role that went to Matt Bomer.

“I auditioned for this,” she wrote. “I told them they shouldn’t have a cis man play a trans woman. They didn’t care.?” She went on to explain at length the damage that such casting decisions can do.

“When @MattBomer plays a trans sex worker, he is telling the world that underneath it all, trans women like me are still really just men.”
