The film is set to be released in November next year.
In July, it was confirmed that a film based around Wham!’s classic Christmas song Last Christmas was in the works. At the time all that was known was that Bryony Kimmings would be one of the film’s co-writers, Paul Feig would be directing it and Emma Thompson and David Livingstone would be co-producing the film.
At the time, Kimmings said that she had been inspired by George Michael’s LGBTQ advocacy, saying: “[When] I wrote my draft, I tried to slip in some trans people and make sure there was queer politics in there.
“I don’t know how much of that remains!”
Since then, Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones and Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians have been cast in the lead roles. And, according to Variety, the film is set to feature some of George Michael’s unreleased music.
The film mainly follows Kate, played by Clarke, who makes a series of bad decisions, and works as an elf in a year-round Christmas store. She eventually runs into Tom, played by Golding, who is able to see through her barriers.
So sadly it seems that there won’t be any LGBTQ characters at the forefront of the film, but we’re still holding out hope that there will be some form of representation.
Last year, Wham! super-fans David Robson and June Clark started a campaign to get Last Christmas to the Christmas number one, as a tribute to the “national icon.” Despite the campaign getting the backing from Michael’s former bandmate, Andrew Ridgley, the campaign was ultimately unsuccessful as the single only reached number two.
Last Christmas is set to be released on 15 November 2019.
