Ryan Murphy has shared the first cast photo from Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of The Prom.

Sitting alongside previously announced stars stars such as Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells and James Corden, the American Horror Story creator wrote: “Meet the incredible icon-packed cast of Netflix’s The Prom.

“A group of true troopers who buckled up and finished shooting during COVID so we could give everybody an inspirational aspirational story that we all need right now. Christmas is right around the corner.”

The acclaimed musical follows four Broadway actors – played by Streep, Kidman, Rannells and Corden – as they travel to the conservative town of Edgewater, Indiana, to help a lesbian student (Jo Ellen Pellman) who’s been banned from bringing her girlfriend to prom.

The star-studded cast also includes Ariana DeBose, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, Kevin Chamberlin, Sofia Deler, Logan Riley Hassel, Mary Kay Place, Nathaniel J. Potvin, Nico Greetham and Tracey Ullman.

Murphy previously revealed that the story resonated with him because he was also banned from bringing a boy to his prom. “The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway,” he said.

“It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too.”

There’s no set release date yet for The Prom, but judging by Murphy’s caption, we can expect this to hit Netflix around Christmas – see below.
