Red, White & Royal Blue fans are in celebration mode.

On Monday (8 May), the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) revealed that the upcoming Prime Video film will be Rated-R as a result of the “language, some sexual content, and partial nudity.”

As the two central characters – in the words of one Twitter user – fuck every time they see each other in the book”,  fans of Casey McQuiston’s iconic New York Bestseller celebrated the news on social media.

“If they’re book accurate it won’t just be “some” sexual content,” said one reader, while another tweeted: “Oh so they really want to keep close to source material. I’m sat.”

Launching 11 August on Prime Video, the highly-anticipated gay romance stars The Kissing Booth’s Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz and Cinderella’s Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry.

The novel follows the story of Alex, the son of America’s first female president (played by Kill Bill icon Uma Thurman), and his complicated relationship with his royal counterpart across the pond.

“Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder, driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time,” reads the synopsis.

“Going into damage-control mode, their families and handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.”

Red, White And Royal Blue’s cast also includes Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Stephen Fry, Ellie Bamber, Thomas Flynn, Malcolm Atobrah, Akshay Khanna, Sharon D Clarke, Aneesh Sheth, and Juan Castano.

Produced by Greg Berlanti, the film is set to be the directorial debut of Tony winner Matthew López – who also wrote the screenplay for the film.

McQuiston expressed their excitement over the long-awaited adaptation in a statement to Deadline following the cast announcement last year.

“It has been a thrill to hand this story over to Berlanti/Schechter, Amazon and our fearless leader Matthew López and watch them make so many smart, bold, thoughtful choices to bring it to life,” they said.

“This casting is no exception. I absolutely can’t wait to see Taylor and Nicholas on-screen as Alex and Henry.”

Perez and Galitzine echoed similar sentiments in individual posts on Instagram. “What an unbelievable honour to bring Alex Claremont-Diaz to the big screen. We won’t let you down,” Perez stated.

Galitzine added: “So pleased to be able to bring Henry to life in Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue, led by the wonderful Matthew López.”
