Neve Campbell revealed what she thinks about the hugely popular theory that Billy and Stu were romantically involved in the first Scream movie.
With 2021 marking the 25th anniversary of the first film in the franchise and the fifth instalment mere days away, scream queen Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) has been discussing her iconic role more than ever.
In an interview with Pride Source, she said “it’s always really lovely” to have LGBTQ+ people tell her that they admire her portrayal of such a strong character in Scream.
“I mean, listen, it’s an honour to play such a strong woman and someone who’s not a victim and someone who takes over and holds her own and won’t allow life to get away with her,” Neve told the outlet about the legacy of Sidney Prescott. “But to realise the impact that has on other people’s lives and that it’s had a positive effect on people is the cherry on top.”
The star, whose character is at the core of the Scream franchise, explained that she thinks anyone who has “felt shut down in some way” or had to “push a glass ceiling” can relate to the perseverance of Sidney as she faced off against a serial killer four times over.
Neve added: “So I think it makes sense certainly for the queer community and gay men.
“But I think also just for anyone who has struggled with bullying or challenges, and in their youth especially.”
When asked about the widely speculated theory that the first film’s killers, Billy and Stu, were secretly romantically involved, Neve appeared to instantly know what Pride Source was referring to.
She quickly asked: “Are you wondering whether there was a burgeoning love relationship going on there?”
Neve then admitted that “it’s very much a possibility” that the characters had LGBTQ+ undertones to them.
“Perhaps, perhaps,” the 48-year-old revealed. “Yeah, it’s very much a possibility, and now that Kevin’s [Williamson] out and talking more about that, I would imagine that’s a big part of his thinking.”
Referencing Kevin Williamson, the mastermind behind the legendary franchise, saying the movies “are coded in gay survival,” Neve added that a queer subplot is a likely “possibility”.
She further clarified: “Well, I don’t know clearly, ’cause Kevin hasn’t said to me clearly that’s what it is, but it is a possibility, right?”
“If I were to theorise, I would say that there was perhaps some confusion with them,” Neve continued. “Pretty confused guys. [Laughs.] And that maybe some of their anger comes from not being allowed to be who they want to be, if you wanna go there.”
The Craft star went on to praise Scream 5, the first to not be directed by Wes Craven since his death in 2015, for its inclusion of queer characters.
“We needed to get to this place where it just becomes fact and it just becomes true, then we accept the fact that we’re all different, and we’re all here,” she We don’t need to pretend that certain groups don’t exist anymore. It’s a great progression.”
