If there’s one pop event the LGBTQ community are suitably excited for this summer, it’s the return of the Spice Girls for a series of huge headline shows across the UK.

And to make this an even more camp affair than it’s already going to be, Melanie C has revealed that she hopes more fans than ever come along in drag as their favourite Spice.

“I have met some incredible Spice Drag acts,” Melanie told Glyn Fussell on his new BBC Radio 1 podcast Drag Queen’s Den. “Back in the day in the late 90s, everyone would turn up to the shows dressed as us.

“In the UK it was just the kids, but in the US all the grown ups did it too. When we get back out on the road next year I hope we’re going to see a lot more of that.

“I hope we see a lot of Posh Spice’s. She needs to be represented in the crowd. It’s the cheapest costume ironically!”

Sporty Spice features on the first episode of the podcast as a Drag Addict, and revealed why she loves the art form so much.

“For me it is such an incredible form of self expression,” she said. “To be larger than life, to not take yourself too seriously, it’s all a bit of fun and to be entertaining.”

You can listen to Glyn Fussell’s new BBC Radio 1 podcast Drag Queen’s Den on the BBC iPlayer here.

His other guests for the first episode include Jodie Harsh, Jamie Campbell, and Radio 1 DJ Greg James.

Meanwhile, the Spice Girls will return as a four-piece (minus Victoria Beckham) for a series of shows this summer, starting at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on 27 May.

The run also includes three sold out headline shows at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London.
