“It was important for Kristen to present herself as queer in the movie and I was all for it.”

Kristen Stewart’s character in Charlie’s Angels is “definitely gay”, according to Elizabeth Banks.

In an interview with Pride Source, the American actress – who wrote and directed the upcoming reboot – was questioned on Sabine’s sexuality, after previously telling Digital Spy that the characters wouldn’t be categorised into labels.

Banks echoed that sentiment, by saying “ambiguity is kind of modern now,” but this time she confirmed: “Kristen’s character is definitely gay in the movie. I mean, she wanted to be gay in the movie and I’m like, “Yeah.”

“We kept that little moment in so that you understand what she was attracted to. You’re welcome to talk to her about it. She loves to be open about it. I just wanted to make sure that she was able to present a character that she was fully behind.”

Banks said the sexuality of the characters wasn’t important, and alluded to all of them being fluid because “everybody sort of flirted with everybody. Everybody could go all ways at all times and we didn’t want to put any limits on anyone.”

She continued of Stewart’s character: “I believe that she refers to herself as queer. I wrote that little moment in that script for her to be like, “Ohhh, hello!” to another woman because I wanted it, even though she flirts with guys and then beats them up.

“It was important for Kristen to present herself as queer in the movie and I was all for it.”

Charlie’s Angels follows the new recruits – played by Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska – as they put their lives on their line to save the world from a young systems engineer with dangerous technology. Banks co-stars as Bosley.

Charlie’s Angels will be released in the UK on 29 November.
