Rob Marshall said he wanted continue the tradition of the films highlighting social movement changes.
The original Mary Poppins featured the suffragette movement, the second film had Jane Banks working as a labour organiser, and director Rob Marshall has expressed an interest in the third film featuring the LGBTQ rights movement.
In an interview with The Advocate, when asked about featuring the LGBTQ rights movement, Marshall said: “Wouldn’t that’d be great? Please, Lord. That’s exactly what should be happening.
“I’m always so aware of that, being a gay man myself. I mean, our movie takes place in the ’30s. But if it were to take place now, that’s exactly what it should be.
“I understand so deeply what it’s like to be on the outskirts and not feel like you are worthy. And I will say that kind of passion to explore acceptance in life is something that’s so important. And so, yes, I’d be all for that, for sure.”
When asked about a sequel to Mary Poppins Returns by The Sun, Marshall said: “It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine.
“That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know…”
He added: “If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?”
Mary Poppins Returns received highly-positive reviews from fans and critics upon release, and has so far grossed over $347 million at the worldwide box office.
Blunt – who assumed the mantle from Julie Andrews – received universal acclaim for her performance as the title character, and was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards.
The film was also nominated for an additional three Golden Globes, eight nominations at the Critics Choice Awards and three nominations at the BAFTAS.
