A Queer As Folk reboot is in development at Bravo.
Russell T. Davies, creator of the iconic British gay drama, will serve as an executive producer, while Canadian screenwriter and director Stephen Dunn is attached to write, direct and executive produce.
Variety learned that Nicola Shindler of Red Productions, who executive produced the original series, will return as executive producer alongside Lee Einsberg of Quantity Entertainment.
NENT Studios company, Digital Rights Group, will also produce the reboot.
Queer As Folk originally ran for two seasons and ten episodes between 1999 and 2000.
The series starred Aiden Gillen, Craig Kelly, Charlie Hunnam, Denise Black, Andy Devine, Jason Merrells, Esther Hall, Sara Todd, Carla Henry, Antony Cotton and Peter O’Brien. It followed three gay men and their lives in the Manchester scene.
A Canadian-American spin-off debuted in 2000 and eventually ran for five seasons and 83 episodes, and was noted for tackling more serious subjects such as AIDS, gay parental rights, and gay marriage.
The reboot will reportedly feature new characters in a different setting. It is currently unknown whether the original cast members will reprise their roles.
However, Charlie Hunnam told The Sun last year that he wants to return to the franchise.
“I’d be game for a reunion,” he admitted. “It’s a long time ago, I’m an old bastard now — that was 20 years ago.”
After the series aired, Hunnam – who played Nathan Maloney in the series – found greater success with his role in FX drama, Sons of Anarchy, which ran for six seasons from 2008 until 2014.
He also starred in Green Street, Pacific Rim, The Lost City of Z and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
