Disney Channel’s first ever coming out scene was absolutely perfect

Disney Channel

Bravo, Disney Channel!

The kids TV network’s popular show Andi Mack has already proven itself as a progressive series, with stories about divorce, interracial relationships, and the discrimination faced by women of colour with natural hair.

During the show’s season two premiere on Friday, the series continued to break new ground, as 13-year-old Cyrus admitted to his best friend Buffy that he has a crush on another guy called Jonah.

“I feel weird… different,” he says.

“Cyrus, you’ve always been weird. But you’re no different,” Buffy replies. “You’ll be okay, I promise.”

The only problem is that titular character Andi also has a crush on Jonah, and Cyrus literally just got himself a girlfriend, so it’ll definitely be interesting to see how this one plays out in future episodes.

Andi Mack is the number one show in America in its time slot for kids aged 6 to 14, meaning its impact will hopefully inspire and educate a new generation of LGBT+ people and allies.

“With more and more young people coming out as LGBTQ, Andi Mack is reflecting the lives and lived experiences of so many LGBTQ youth around the country,” said GLAAD president Sarah Kate Ellis.

While a Disney Channel coming out might have been long overdue, it’s heartening to see that they got it so right.
