Drag Race weatherman: BBC have always supported me being openly LGBT+ on screen

Earlier this month, Owain Wyn Evans shot to international fame when a video of him serving up a sickening weather broadcast took the internet by storm. By storm – geddit?

With everyone from his BBC employees to icon RuPaul herself commenting on his impressive creation of Drag Race references, the openly LGBT+ BBC staff member has spoken exclusively to Gay Times about the national broadcasters attitude towards proud individuality on screen.

“The BBC (and Look North) have been amazingly supportive as far as that goes,” proudly proclaims Owain when discussing the BBC’s open attitude towards him being public about his sexuality at work – both on screen and off.

“My experience has always been really positive, especially since I’ve been working for Look North, they’ve been great.

“One of the things I don’t think twice about doing now is, if I’m presenting then weather or one of the radio shows in Yorkshire, I wouldn’t think twice about referring to my husband or something that I did with him over the weekend.

“It’s important for people to hear that in conversation on the radio. ”

Once the video went online and the hits started to roll in, it soon became clear that it was to become quite the sensation online. But that was never the intention for Owain – nor did he ever expect such attention once it started to gain traffic online – at half a million views, and counting!

“I thought, when I was recording it, ‘I think a few people are going to get this,” he laughs when discussing life as the UK’s new Drag Race go-to-guy. “I know a lot of my followers would get it. I had no idea it would blow up and be so big.”

And when he realised the star and creator of Drag Race – of which all the sayings are taken from – liked the video? Owain admits that it was an “amazing” thing.

Owain also told us that his favourite Drag Race quote comes from icon Latrice Royale’s “EAT IT!”, which is exactly what he has to say to the haters. However, his favourite queen from the show “has got to be Katya”.

About his own potential future on the drag reality show show, this flame-haired reporter said his drag name would most definitely be Amber Warning. And if he had to lip-sync for his life? His choice of song would totally be Britney Spear’s You Drive Me Crazy.

Thankfully, it seems this won’t be the end of his themed weather reports, as Owain promises there’s new ideas coming. We’re seriously hoping that Amber Alert will be making an appearance!
