Lily James to play young Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia! sequel

Actress Lily James is set to play a young Meryl Streep in the recently announced Mamma Mia sequel Here We Go Again.

Lily will play a ‘young Donna’ – the character made famous by Meryl in the original movie – according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The new movie is expected to feature flashback and hidden stories from Donna (Meryl’s role) life, possibly including how she found herself on the island – later with three potential fathers for her daughter.

Lily was seen recently in the title role of Disney’s Cinderella, and even voiced the track A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes for the movie. So when it comes to belting out a Mamma Mia tune, we’re in safe hands it seems.

Lily joins an already star cast including Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski and Colin Firth.

Here We Go Again will also feature Abba songs that were NOT included in the 2008 movie. It’s expected that some of our favourite Abba hits will however make a welcomed return.

The movie is based off the internationally acclaimed stage musical that’s produced and created by Judy Craymer, who is leading this sequel.

Abba’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus have confirmed they’re joining the creative team once again to provide music and lyrics – they’ll also serve as executive producers.

Oh… and the movie is expected to still be set on a Greek island. Sun, songs and boys in shorts.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again will be written and directed by Ol Parker of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel success . It will be released officially on 20 July 20 2018 – ten years and two days after Mamma Mia! opened.

Is this the perfect time to blast out Dancing Queen? It seems fitting…
