Call Me By Your name author André Aciman is writing a sequel to his bestselling novel.
The novel was recently adapted into a motion picture starring American actors Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, and received universal acclaim from critics. It was subsequently nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Shortly after its release, fans clamoured for a sequel because the final scene in the film isn’t where the story ends in Aciman’s novel, with Oliver and Elio’s romance lingering over them both for another two decades.
Aciman revealed on Twitter earlier today that we’re going to receive more insight into both characters and their lives after that summer, because he’s working on a follow-up.
“I would actually love a sequel to Call Me By Your Name. In fact I am writing one,” he tweeted.
The film’s director, Luca Guadagnino, told USA Today at the start of this year that he was working on a sequel with Aciman, which is going to be a “new movie, a different tone” which will take place “five or six years afterwards”.
Guadagnino added that they just need to finalise the script before they can figure out when filming could begin.
Last month, Hammer appeared at the Savannah College of Art and Design Film Festival, and once again confirmed that a Call Me By Your Name sequel is happening, and said Guadagino already knows what will happen in it.
“Luca has walked me through the movie: where it starts, where it goes, where it ends, all the characters, and everything that’s supposed to happen,” he said, according to Vulture. “We know this. He’s basically broken this down for us.”
But despite the story already being planned out, Armie said the film won’t be arriving for a while – and it sounds like we’ll have years to wait for it.
“Chronologically in the story line, it doesn’t happen right after the first one,” he explained. “There is a gap. So Luca wants to wait so that we age a bit more so that gap makes sense, kind of like a Linklater thing.”
Chalamet also confirmed that both he and Hammer are up for a sequel to the beloved film. Speaking to Time magazine, the actor said: “I don’t see any world where it doesn’t happen.”
He continued: “I think André [Aciman, the book’s author] is comfortable with a sequel being made. I know Luca really wants it. And I know Armie and I are 1000% in.”
