American Horror Story: The Walking Dead?
American Horror Story just finished airing its eighth season, the much-anticipated crossover between the series’ first and third season, Murder House and Coven.
Thankfully, it didn’t disappoint, and marked the return of the American Horror Story we all know and love after a few subpar seasons (Hotel, Cult).
Unsurprisingly, it ended with a cliffhanger, which has us all thinking – will the ninth instalment be Apocalypse the sequel, or will it be another standalone story?
We’ve compiled a list of potential themes for the highly-anticipated ninth season.

Zombies
American Horror Story: The Walking Dead? Surely it’s about time? The series explored zombies in the third season, Coven, when the witches of Miss Robichaux’s Academy were targeted by voodoo queen Marie Laveau. The prosthetics were incredible and they were genuinely quite terrifying, so we’d love to see how Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates would fare against a hoard of the undead.
Ghost Ship
We’ve been introduced to several ghosts throughout the series, most memorably in Murder House and Roanaoke, but imagine seeing how it would play out at sea? It’s an idea that’s been thrown around a few times, and fans have expressed desire for this to be explored. We understand why it’s not come to fruition, because it would require a hefty budget, but we have a feeling it could be one of the most terrifying instalments to date.
Area 54
Again, aliens have been explored but not in a lot of detail. In Asylum, Kit Walker (Evan Peters) experiences paranormal disturbances and starts having a series of bizarre visions involving green humanoids. Later, Kit is abducted by extraterrestrials and is experimented on, with his fate left unknown. To be honest, it was a pointless addition to the series, and is need of a redemption… So, season nine?
Mummy’s Crypt
Over the past century, we’ve been provided with so many iconic mummy-related classics such as: The Mummy (1932), Bubba Ho-Tep (2003), The Mummy’s Tomb (1942) etc, but we can’t remember the last time a film left us truly terrified. It’s a genre that’s not often explored, and if it is, it’s with a comedic twist (Brendon Fraser’s Mummy franchise springs to mind). Can Ryan Murphy do justice to this genre? We think so.
Apocalypse: Part 2
Like we said earlier, the last season left so much to be desired. The finale of Apocalypse saw Cordelia (Sarah Paulson), Mallory (Billie Lourd) and the rest of the coven defeat the anti-christ after ten explosive episodes, just for another one to be reborn… Can we really do another season? Or will Ryan Murphy leave it open ended? Whatever the case, we’d love to see these characters return in some form.
Summer Camp
American Horror Story often explores sci-fi and the paranormal, but it’s rare for the series to have a pretty grounded storyline. Cult did this, but not… successfully. The slasher genre has been quite dormant over the past decade – due to the resurgence of supernatural horror films – but with the recent acclaim and box office success of the new Halloween, we think there’s room for a whole season dedicated to a masked serial killer. A summer camp, maybe? Bring back Bloody Face and/or Twisty and we’d be there.
Artificial Intelligence
Ryan Murphy previously stated that each season of American Horror Story holds clues to the following season’s theme. The final few episodes of Apocalypse introduced us to Jeff Pfister (Evan Peters) and Mutt Nutter (Billy Eichner), two dweebs who experiment with artificial intelligence – so is this what can we expect from season nine? Black Mirror already do this (incredibly well), but we’d be intrigued to see how American Horror Story’s blend of camp and horror would mix with an I, Robot/Ex Machina scenario.
Cannibals
One of the best aspects of the show’s sixth season, Roanaoke, was the introduction of the cannibal Cain family, who kidnapped Lee (Adina Porter), Monet (Angela Bassett), and Audrey (Sarah Paulson) and forced them to eat a piece of Lee’s leg. It’s baffling how the show hasn’t dedicated a whole season to this, considering the amount of cannibal films we’ve been treated to in the past few decades: Wrong Turn, The Hills Have Eyes, Raw, The Green Inferno. Imagine all the gore…
