Troye Sivan has released the first single from the upcoming Boy Erased soundtrack.

Revelation, a collaboration with Icelandic musician Jónsi, is a haunting ballad inspired by a scene in the film where the protagonist has a romantic interaction with another boy for the first time.

“God doesn’t strike him down and the world doesn’t fall apart,” Troye said of the track. “And maybe he even kind of enjoys it, and maybe it feels right for the first time.

“The idea of that person being a revelation in your life, where you can kind of do something that feels so natural and so right and be fine on the other side, that was a really potent thing in my head.”

Based on Garrard Conley’s memoir of the same name, the movie tells the story of Jared (Lucas Hedges) – the son of a Baptist pastor – who is outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe), and forced to attend a conversion therapy program.

Once there, Jared meets others like him and comes into conflict with the homophobic head therapist (Joel Edgerton).

Edgerton, who also directs the film, told Entertainment Weekly: “The film satisfies the dramatic and salacious stuff that interested me, but it also had an emotional resonance to it that I felt didn’t just make it a dark and nihilistic story.

“Garrard’s story is so full of redemption. My approach and treatment of this story was that there were no villains, that everyone thought they were doing the right thing.”

Boy Erased will be Troye’s feature film debut.
