Everybody say ‘love’!
At last night’s 70th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards (9 September), RuPaul bagged his third consecutive trophy for Outstanding Host of a Reality Competition Program for Drag Race.
Mama Ru beat out strong competition for the award, such as Ellen Degeneres, Heidi Klum, Jane Lynch and W. Kamau Bell.
“Everybody say ‘love!’” he said as he took to the stage. “Now drive that down to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Our show is about love and the tenacity of the human spirit. We are so happy to present all these queens to the world.”
The critically-acclaimed series also took home awards for Outstanding Costumes for Variety, Non-Fiction or Reality Programming, Outstanding Hairstyling for a Multi-Camera Series or Special and Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program.
Netflix series Queer Eye won Outstanding Structured Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured or Competition Reality Program and Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program.
Next Monday (17 September), RuPaul and the team behind Drag Race are looking to make history, by becoming the first unscripted show to win both the host and the Reality-Competition Series gong in the same year.
In the 15 years since the award was introduced, only three shows have won: The Amazing Race (10 times), The Voice (four times) and Top Chef (once).
Drag Race will be competing against The Amazing Race, American Ninja Warrior, Project Runway, Top Chef and The Voice.
